Sociocultural Linguisticsの翻訳

最近は Linguistic Anthropologyというブログに寄稿している。そして、今年から人類学の授業も言語学の授業も教えている。実は、私の研究は人類学にも言語学にも似てるところも違うところもあると思う。

私の研究では ethnography(民俗誌）も discourse analysis(談話分析)も linguistic theory(方法分析）も social theory(社会科)も使う。だから、人類学と言語学と社会学の間に突き止められる。

最近、英語で sociocultural linguisticsという用語が使われている。Sociocultural linguisticsは「the broad interdisciplinary field concerned with the intersection of language, culture, and society」ということだ(Bucholtz and Hall 2005)。　では、Sociocultural linguisticsは日本語で何と呼べばいいであろうか。

｢社会言語学｣という言葉はいつも｢sociolinguistics｣と訳される。しかし、真田、渋谷、陣内と杉戸（２００４）は、「社会言語学は、社会の中で生きる人間、乃至その集団とのかかわりにおいて各言語現像あるいは言語運用をとらえようとする学問」である。その上に、社会言語学の中には属性と言葉（cf. variationist sociolinguistics）や言語行動や言語生活(cf. linguistic anthropology)や言語計画(language planning)などがあると説明している。これはSociocultural linguistics と似ていないだろうか。
